AI act - the nexus between law, technology and philosphy

Image
In late august the European parliament launched new legislation on AI, and scholarship probably will spend the coming decades interpreting it. Due to this being a new legislation, this is also something that will take time before can see it's full extent and application. This is something that is quite problematic, since the world right now are screaming for more and more people with knowledge on AI, from it's technical development to legislation and policy. When I was working out a new course that I have taught at Lund University this fall, I therefore had to turn to the very slim literature on it and I actually found two very interesting articles.  The first was written by Stefan Larsson which adressed the theme of legal pace. From this perspective, there is always a tension between law and technology, since latter often develops faster than first. Furthermore, AI often comes with a huge bagage technologically speaking which will give us several problems when trying to regu...

The idea of giving advice and why taking them sometimes is a bad idea

On the picture above I am in my early twenties. The picture was taken around two years before I decided to pursuit my dream to become a historian. Becoming a historian was never easy choice, due to that I lived in a society where the humanities were often seen as useless and leading to unemployment. Eventually I however took the step, finished a one year masters and a couple of years later I was admitted into a PhD-programe at Malmö university. During my PhD I was basically constantly stressed about the future and many PhD-students was prone to believe in doomsday, that after you finished your PhD it was basically game-over. For me, that did not happened. I got research grants before I was done with my PhD and after 1,5 years as a scholarship-based post-doc I got a temporarily job at Linneaus university, were I am currently a senior lecture even though I probably have a long time ahead before gaining tenure.  What I, however, have come to learn during this journey is two thi...

Sorting-mechanics and why I do not believe in grades

Image
(If any of my students reads this: as an academic I do not believe in grades. As an employed lecturer I however always follow the directions of the university, and hence I will grade your paper) A week ago a government enquiry was presented about the teachers education. I have not had the time to read it yet, but from what I’ve heard it contains several suggestions that I as an educator is quite positive to at least try. What however have become quite discussed in the media is that future teacher students have to have atleast the grade C in Swedish on a A-F scale. This is a discussion which I am quite critical of from two perspectives. In a more general social discursive mode I am critical of it since it enhances the idea of teacher students as being slackers. I have been involved in teachers education since 2018 and have met around 700-900 future teachers. What often strikes me time and again is that they are very engaged in their studies. In all my years as an educator I have on...

Minding the gap: re-visiting texts I once thought I understood

Image
This semester I have taught a class on the use of history. Due to this being a first cycle course students studying , its texts have to be in Swedish. A consequence of this is that we often ends up with Swedish writers, were one is the writings of professor Klas-Göran Karlsson, whom I actually had as a professor in ancient times when I was a student.  My previous department often discussed Karlssons texts and often takes his typology of uses of history as point of departure. In this regard it is basically often stated that Karlsson have identifiers four or five modes in how history is used. In this regard Karlsson for instance have identified the political use of history, where history is utilised as a way to legitimize claims of for instance how to arrange society or to create social coherence within a country. Other modes identified is the academic use, the commercial and the none use of history.  Sometimes in academia this text is utilised to criticise those historian...
